Engine Maintenance
Taking care of your narrowboat engine may seem like a daunting task but the Calcutt engineering department can remove all these worry’s! We offer a full maintenance service to help you take proper care of your narrowboat.
Looking after your engine and servicing regularly is an essential part of keeping you moving efficiently and helps to ensure you trouble free cruising.
Our Recommended basic engine service consists of an oil and oil filter change, a fuel filter change, gearbox oil check and change if needed, and a drive belt check and change if required.
We would recommend that the engine oil and filter is changed ideally every 250 running hours. Most engine manuals say not to worry about the fuel filters until 500 running hours but with the recent increase in cases of diesel bug and contamination we would now recommend doing the fuel filter at the same time.
We offer a full range of engine services from oil changes through to full engine refits. Engines we service include; BMC, Beta, Vetus, Isuzu, Canal Line, and Barrus. We also specialise in BMC engines holding a vast stock of new and previously enjoyed parts for these engines. Our engineering department can offer a full rebuild service by one of our specialise engineers.

Advice note;
You should change the oil and oil filter at least once a year. This is best done at the end of your cruising season so that acidic dust caused by the engine is not left sitting in the engine throughout winter causing corrosion.
